Description

Blessed Thistle

Traditional Use: Used during the Middle Ages to treat the bubonic plague and as a tonic for monks

Common Use: Today, blessed thistle is prepared as a tea and used for loss of appetite and indigestion; and to treat colds, cough, cancer, fever, bacterial infections, and diarrhea. It is also used as a diuretic for increasing urine output, and for promoting the flow of breast milk in new mothers.

Dispensing: The German Commission E monograph recommends 4–6 grams of blessed thistle per day. Alternatively, tincture (1/2 teaspoon [2 ml] three times per day) may be used. Approximately 1/2 teaspoon (2 grams) of the dried herb can also be added to 1 cup (250 ml) of boiling water and steeped 10 to 15 minutes to make a tea.
