Echinacea

Traditional Use: The nine Echinacea species were most widely used—both historically and currently—by Native Americans of the Great Plains for medicinal purposes. “Echinacea angustifolia, also known as Echinacea or the purple coneflower, has been the most widely used medicinal plant of the Plains Indians in North America.

Common Use: Today, people use echinacea to shorten the duration of the common cold and flu, and reduce symptoms, such as sore throat (pharyngitis), cough, and fever. Many herbalists also recommend echinacea to help boost the immune system and help the body fight infections.

Dispensing: Echinacea supplement manufacturers recommend various dosages, so check the label or ask your doctor to recommend how much echinacea you should take. Most dosages suggest one or two capsules between two and four times per day for up to 10 days.
