Description
Traditional Use: All parts of hibiscus plants are used traditionally. Due to their soothing (demulcent) and astringent properties, the flowers and leaves have been traditionally used to treat conditions such as cancer and gallbladder attacks, to lower blood pressure, to relieve dry coughs, and topically to treat skin afflictions.
Common Use: Antidiabetic and anticancer effects are among the purported benefits of hibiscus. Hibiscus preparations may also help lower blood pressure, protect the liver, and decrease fasting blood sugar.
Dispensing: Drinking hibiscus tea in moderate amounts is generally considered safe. The safety of other preparations, such as extracts, capsules, and powders, is not well known. Some research indicates that prolonged use of high doses of hibiscus extract may cause liver injury.
