Stone Root

Traditional Use: The root and rhizome (underground stem) are used to make medicine. Stone root is used to treat urinary tract problems including bladder pain and swelling (inflammation), stones in the kidney and elsewhere in the urinary tract, and excess uric acid in the urine.

Common Use: Today, it’s most commonly marketed as a way to help relieve kidney stones.

Dispensing: Very old case reports note 1 cup (240 mL) of infusion, 10–60 grains of powdered root, 1–3.5 mL of root extract, or up to 7 mL of tincture as the most common dosages. Yet, more studies are needed to determine which forms or dosages — if any — are effective.
